Transformation and insight – concept and realization – evolution and ignorance.
“WAS___” presents the first 66 meters of a graphic score at the beginning of a ten-year interdisciplinary journey through space and sound by MMM (Maja Osojnik, Mathia*s Lenz, and Matija Schellander). Over the next decade, the score will document traces of time in a polymorphic way, inscribing them within itself, so to speak, and developing sound and image structures that invite us to think about music outside the traditional notation system. Linocut, cyanotype, acetone, and other printing techniques—the score winds its way through the space in many forms, spreading further and further throughout the exhibition—audio tapes, tape heads, and loudspeakers invite the audience to participate. The score is a dynamic process, a collective diary, a spatial soundscape, and a dialogue all at once. At its center, it leaves room for (installative sound) performances in which MMM 2025, together with percussionist Špela Mastnak, acoustically and haptically explore the phenomenon of skin – as a sensory organ for touch and perception: by touching, pressing, scratching, or deforming materials such as paper, balloons, or foil. As an interface between inside and outside, the exploration of the theme of “skin” opens up a multi-layered field of experimentation in which physical interaction with the sound materials blurs the boundaries between action and reception and, at the same time, creates a microacoustic landscape. Thus, the score continues to grow with each year — as an open, changing work that is constantly reshaped through its repeated realization. In 2035, the score will reach its final length of 660 meters. In 2036, it will be cut into 100 unique pieces and released together with a recording in a limited vinyl edition.
